This calculator is designed for quick and easy calculation of alcohol dilution with water. It is based on the simple principle that the amount of pure alcohol remains the same before and after dilution. You can use it to calculate how much water to add to a given volume of alcohol, or how much base alcohol you need to obtain a desired volume at a given strength.
The results are accurate enough for most practical purposes, such as preparing home-distilled spirits, liqueurs or similar drinks. In practice, it is worth knowing that alcohol and water do not mix in a perfectly ideal way. Volumes do not add up completely linearly, the mixture may warm slightly, and a small volume contraction can occur. For this reason, calculations are an approximation, though usually very close to the actual result.
For the best approximation, we recommend that the alcohol and water be at approximately the same temperature, and that after mixing you let the liquid rest for a while to fully combine. If you want to determine the final alcohol strength very precisely, it is always advisable to verify it with a hydrometer or other measuring instrument.
The calculator is therefore an excellent tool for quick orientation and planning of dilution, but the final result should always be verified by measurement in practice.
